I’d like to file a missing persons report for the Tea Party.
Surely something drastic must have happened to this once large and very boisterous portion of the Republican Party.
That is the only possible explanation as to why we have not seen the Tea Party standing on top of buildings and screaming at the top of their lungs over the past several years.
The Tea Party really formed during the Obama administration due to republican’s dissatisfaction with the spending habits of Obama and democrats.
The Tea party would hold huge rallies around the country discussing how the deficits Obama was running were ruining this nation and destroying our children’s future. The government was even shut down in 2013 due, in large part, to the Tea Party’s stance on government spending.
Fast forward to 2019…and crickets.
The Tea Party has either vanished off the face of the earth or somehow been silenced.
Now, at first glance one might assume that this is because republicans have taken over power and have reduced the annual budget deficit to a level that is satisfactory to the Tea Party.
But upon further analysis, that couldn’t possibly be the case.
The budget deficit has skyrocketed under republicans and President Trump.
Here are the annual budget deficits during the final four years of the Obama administration:
2013 – $679 billion
2014 – $485 billion
2015 – $438 billion
2016 – $585 billion
Now, before reading on to Trump’s annual deficits, remember, the Tea Party shut down the government in 2013 over a $679 billion budget deficit.
Here are the annual budget deficits under the Trump administration:
2017 – $665 billion
2018 – $779 billion
2019 – $1.09 trillion
2020 – $1.11 trillion (projected based on 2020 budget).
What makes the Trump deficits even more shocking is that this is occurring during a booming economy when tax revenue is typically higher and the government does not need to spend to stimulate the economy.
What could the Trump budget deficits possibly balloon to when the economy inevitably begins to slow?
And yet the Tea Party has gone silent.
A $1.09 trillion, with a “T”, in 2019 alone…and not a peep from the Tea Party.
So I will repeat: I would like to file a missing persons report for the Tea Party.
Perhaps they have been abducted by aliens?
Perhaps the entire Tea Party was mistakenly locked in at one of their rallies in late 2016 and we simply have not located them yet?
But something must have happened to this once influential portion of the Republican Party if they have been silenced while republicans and the Trump admin send our annual budget deficits through the roof.
