Last night’s State of the Union was made for TV drama at it’s finest. Not going to lie, State of the Union’s are often a stale, long and boring affairs. Last night however, pure must see TV. I couldn’t keep my eyes off the TV the entire time.
Let’s start with President Trump’s entrance.
I’ll never get tired of listening to the House Sergeant at Arms announce, “Mr./Madam Speaker, the President of the United States!”. Gives me goosebumps every time, no matter who is sitting in the Oval Office.
Then you have Trump enter the House Chamber like he is Vince McMahon of the WWE.
That was followed by the first big eye popping moment of the night. Trump snubs Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi’s extended handshake. Coldblooded, and I like it. It’s no secret these two HATE each other, so why would tonight be any different.
Then, over the course of the next 90 minutes, Trump actually delivered a pretty damn good speech. We all know Trump used to host numerous television shows, including his famous “The Apprentice”, so he definitely has a way of catering to TV dramatics and the emotional side of his audience.
You had wonderful, human experiences in the audience over the course of his speech. From the always tear jerking military family reunion, to a young boy who’s dream is to join Space X when he’s older sitting next to his 100 year old Great Grandfather, who is one of the last remaining Tuskegee airmen.
You also had an emotional moment where Trump gave a full scholarship to a young girl sitting in the stands with her mother after they were previously denied, and then awarded a teary eyed Rush Limbaugh the Medal of Freedom. Each of these moments carefully crafted to hit the heartstrings of his base and the larger American public, while also pushing his political agenda straight in the face of his Democratic counterparts. It was impressive. And well done.
This is all led to what will be the most memorable moment of the entire must see TV event. Trump completes his speech to thunderous applause, and in the background Nancy Pelosi rips up her copy of Trump’s speech not once, but twice! Jaw-dropping.
Say what you will about both Trump and Pelosi, but my god do they both know how to cater to their audience. This is politics we’re talking about, and the State of the Union is usually a snoozefest. But last night, I was on the edge of my seat in the same way I was watching the Super Bowl two days earlier. You just did not know what was going to happen next, and I have to tell you, I loved it.
Now if you follow politics closely, most of these antics probably did not surprise you, but for the general public in an election year, how can you not get excited for the upcoming coverage of this year’s election. And that is my point to writing this blog. We need the general public to pay attention this year, and if that means dramatic TV events like last night’s State of the Union to get more people to tune in and watch coverage this year, then I am all for it. At the end of the day you hope American’s pick up on the true agendas of the person they ultimately vote for this November. While it may start with TV spetacles, if you get people to tune in more and more, eventually they will start to pay attention to what the person is saying and how it affects their lives – not just the letter that sits in front of their name, (R) or (D).
