Democrats failed in their congressional oversight duties with regards to the impeachment process.
That much is certain.
Democrats ran much of their inquiry behind closed doors and the only public witnesses they called were witnesses they knew would be beneficial to their cause.
This is how banana republics are run.
The articles of impeachment will eventually be sent to the republican run senate, at which point republicans will be our last hope to avoid sending our once great republic into what could well be an irreversible decent.
Unfortunately it appears that republicans are heading down the exact same path as democrats.
Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell has already stated that he is not an impartial juror and that he is currently working hand-in-hand with the White House on the structure of the trail.
McConnell has also stated that he will not call witnesses requested by democrats during the trail.
Forget what party you may consider yourself a part of, that kind of activity should be appalling to every single American.
The founding fathers created three co-equal branches of government, all with the ability to conduct oversight over the other branches. We vote in members of congress and the senate with the expectation that they will fulfill their duty in an honorable manner.
Democrats have already failed us.
Republicans now have a duty to save this once great republic.
Senate republicans need to run an exhaustive trial and investigation into the accusations made against President Trump.
They need to call ALL witnesses, including Mick Mulvaney, Rudy Giuliani and anyone else inside or outside of the White House that may potentially have knowledge of the president’s interactions with the Ukraine.
Members of both parties need to be able to have equal time to question all witnesses, just like a normal trial.
Senate republicans are not defense attorneys for the president, they are elected officials with a duty to conduct a thorough investigation and trail into the accusations made against the president in congress’ articles of impeachment.
Of course the senate majority has the right to run their impeachment trail any way they would like, that is a benefit that comes with holding the majority.
And it would be very easy for republicans to say, “oh, look at what democrats did with the impeachment investigation in congress. We will now do the same in the senate.”
But that type of behavior and thought pattern then makes republicans every bit as bad as congressional democrats.
It will give the impression that republicans are hiding witnesses and evidence with the intention of protecting the president; and that is how banana republics are formed.
In addition to restoring the faith of millions in their government and its ability to conduct fair oversight, a fully objective trial with all potential witnesses called and both sides given the ability to question those witnesses should also benefit the one person they are at the end of the day attempting to protect – the president.
If there was no wrongdoing by the president, then this should serve to his benefit as one witness after another would come in and testify that the president did not do what he is being accused of in the articles of impeachment.
It should be a win-win for republicans, our nation and the president.
Republicans would emerge as the morally superior party as they would have taken their oversight duty seriously and conducted a fair and thorough investigation.
It would benefit the nation as there would be no questions about a cover-up or unfair trial conducted by our government.
And it should benefit the president if there was truly no wrongdoing with regards to his interactions with the Ukraine.
Sadly this does not appear to be the path that senate republicans are taking.
But the articles of impeachment have not yet been sent to the senate and the senate impeachment hearings have not yet begun.
So there is still time for republicans to do the right thing and perhaps save this nation from barreling towards a true banana republic.
