Before I get started, I admit, this take is a little bit far-fetched. But, has the recent drone strike on Iranian General Qasem Soleimani tipped Trump’s hand that he is genuinely concerned about the impending Impeachment Trial and Re-election in 2020?
Let me elaborate.
A decisive, but undeniably risky target of a high ranking official in the Iranian government brings about significant debate over Trump’s leadership. Has he just started WWIII? Perhaps, he has demonstrated leadership that the U.S. is not going to stand by and continue to let a ruthless murder, such as Soleimani, continue his antics? Either way, no one is talking about Trump’s impeachment at the moment.
You can draw stark similarities back to 1998 when the Clinton impeachment was getting underway, and the Clinton administration chose that timing to bomb the Al-Shifa pharmaceutical factory in the Sudan.
While many questioned the attack by the Clinton administration, it took the attention away from the impeachment and upcoming election for a brief moment and drew the attention to his leadership and decisiveness.
Don’t get me wrong, this recent attack on Soleimani could provide grave consequences and escalate a highly volatile region into an all-out war with the U.S. But, I genuinely wonder if the over-arching motive was to take away the attention of concerning elements, such as the impeachment and re-election, with a prominent drone strike and military action.
Perhaps Trump is growing concerned with his once solid base of supporters by providing them with a military anecdote of leadership that they can grab hold off and further inflame their undying support for the man.
Whatever the case may be, I find the timing of this attack to be too politically motivated. The repercussions of this attack may be felt in the coming weeks and months. However, my take is that this action has greatly tipped Trump’s hand that he is truly concerned with this impeachment and his chances of re-election.
