Forget about the debt ceiling and partial government shutdown, these are small potatoes compared to what is really going on in America right now.
For possibly the first time in American history, we are seeing an instance of minority rule, which is of course something that should never occur in a truly free democracy.
Last year’s election was about Obamacare, tax policies, spending policies, social issues such as abortion and gay marriage, etc. and Democrats won that election convincingly despite an economy that was, at best, limping along.
Obama easily won re-election and Democrats gained seats in both the House and Senate.
Had the American public wanted Obamacare repealed, wanted republican tax and spending policies or were on board with Republican’s views on social issues they would have told us so.
Well, that’s quite simple; Republicans would have won the election.
Mitt Romney would have been elected president and Republicans would have gained seats in both the House and Senate.
But that didn’t happen.
The American people had their say last November, yet their government is now being ruled by the minority that lost that election.
This is truly an amazing development in American democracy…and it’s a development that could signal major problems for the entire American political system.
Minority rule is the worst nightmare of any true democracy.
Despite the majority of the Americans rejecting their ideas during the last election, Republicans have shut down the government and are threatening to default on our nation’s loans unless Democrats accept the views and positions that the American public voted against just 10 months ago.
This is a completely backwards position and one that should never occur in a free democracy.
Republicans control the purse string in Congress, but this entire mess didn’t even start over the budget. If Republicans wanted to have a debate about the budget, about what they would approve to spend next year, etc. fair enough.
But Republicans sent a continuing resolution to the Senate which had completely unrelated items attached to it such as repealing Obamacare, altering abortion laws, altering access to contraception, etc.
No wonder why Senate Majority leader Harry Reid had one look at their CR and said “they’ve lost their minds.”
This would be the equivalent of Democrats controlling the House while Republicans controlled the Senate and White House and Democrats saying that they will shut down the entire government unless new gun restrictions were passed and gay marriage was made legal throughout the nation…a completely outrageous position as gun laws and gay marriage have absolutely nothing to do with a continuing resolution to fund the government.
The entire American political system as it risk right now for two main reasons:
1) There is a party out there that is willing to go to these outrageous and extreme lengths to get what they want despite the American public having voted against these positions in the past election.
2) That this is type of behavior is legally allowed within the American political system – no one has thought that it might be a good idea to make it illegal to attach completely unrelated ideological items to a simple bill to fund the government.
The Republican Party legally has the right to do what they are doing under the laws of the United States…but this is clearly not the way a true democracy is meant to function.
When you have a voting public that voted one way just 10 months ago, and then you have a small minority that is able to run the government in a manner that is completely against what the voting public has just voted for, you have a democracy that is not functioning properly.
And that is precisely what we are seeing right now in America.
