In the world of politics, nothing feels better than to hear candidates who share the same ideas and values as you do. A politician who sounds like they are speaking from the heart and not from a teleprompter. Promising you a better future for our country. You eventually make up your mind and decide on the candidate you wish to support.
There are many different ways and different levels of dedication to your candidate. Some choose a simple donation or even caucus for their candidate and even become a delegate for them. It really amazes me how much time and effort people put behind their candidate. I also cannot believe how much money a candidate can raise for their campaign.
In the end it is always a wonderful feeling when the person you invested so much into becomes elected, so they can get to work to fulfill their promises. However, as we look throughout history many promises have not been kept. In fact some politicians seem to go against just about every thing they campaigned for or against. What exactly are people to do or how are they supposed to feel when this happens?
For example, the famous line of George H.W. Bush when he said “Read my lips. No new taxes” But he voted to raise taxes. To today’s example of President Obama who promised to close down Guantanamo Bay, protect and defend whistleblowers, and promise more transparency leaving us all to believe that our government will finally be open and honest with the people.
In the light of recent attacks of our rights and liberties as far as NSA surveillance and what seems to be a rise of a police state, what are we to do? How can we trust our politicians when the very things this country was founded on are almost considered illegal today?
Our right to assemble has been declared trespassing and many people are being arrested and abused over it. Not to mention the passing of the Patriot Act and the NDAA which gives our government the power to legally detain you without warrant or reason should they suspect you of being a “threat”. Also, the invasive TSA pat downs of every human being from children to the elderly.
Don’t get me wrong I am all for keeping an eye on shady characters, but I reject the idea that the American people have basically been declared “the enemy” and we all need to be watched like an ant under a microscope for our “safety and security”. For being the land of the free we are slowly but surely being controlled into submission.
I do not know about the rest of you but I did not vote for any of this which makes me question weather or not our votes truly count. Should we allow our efforts and our money to be used to support such a system? Should we continue to waste our time supporting candidates who obviously do not support us? Or are we just not focused on the right issues?
It is very troubling to me that we support one side or the other, yet neither side seem to hold up to their word. Kind of like pro wrestling, its bad vs. good in the ring, but behind the scenes they are all friends working for the same company. What bothers me even more is that we are all so torn on so many issues. Issues our politicians have been back and forth on, so why do we support either side as deeply as we do?
